There is much speculation about how Arthur Tomkinson Haywood lived in South Africa. It is likely this was on the back of the Boer War. Young “Soldiers” fought in the Boer Wars - in the second war they made a name for themselves and many fought as mercenaries earning big money. It is possible this is why Arthur was in South Africa and Joined the Mounted police - he may previously been a cavalryman. He was certainly awarded the Queen’s Medal under Victoria.

Ex-Tyrrhenia (1924). Note: The Anchor liner Cameronia was nearly identical in appearance.

In 1938 she made a new eastward record by crossing in 3 days, 20 hours and 42 minutes. Note: From keel to masthead 234 feet. Foremost funnel 70 feet high from deck level; from keel to top of funnel 180 feet high. Diameter of funnels measure 30 feet. Length on water line 1,004 feet. Displacement before the war listed as 77,482 tons. Served as a troopship in World War II. Re-entered trans-Atlantic service in August 1947. The actual story of the naming of this wonderful luxury liner was revealed in the press. Sir Percy Bates, former head of the Cunard Line, told King George V of their decision to name the new ship "after one of Britain’s most noble queens." The King, thinking they intended to name the liner after his wife, the Queen, expressed enthusiastic approval. The Cunard Line promptly fell in line with the King’s thought, and the ship was christened Queen Mary. The company’s previous intention was to name the vessel after Queen Victoria, in keeping with their established policy of using only names ending in "ia" for their ships. Passenger accommodation as of 1960: 700 first, 680 cabin, 500 tourist. Running mate: Queen Elizabeth.
