When the family moved to Stockport they lived at 37 Langham Road, Off Didsbury Road, Heaton Mersey in a Council House. The family then moved to 5 Merton Road, Cheadle Heath a rented house and then to 5 Hythe Road Cheadle Heath which was bought.
Ernest had an accident when he was very young. One story is that he was with his father in the pits when the accident happened and he was trapped. Uncle Harold thinks that the accident happened on the railway when Ernest was lifting the heavy chains that linked railway carriages and he suffered a stomach rupture. I think the second story is more likely to be the correct one as we don’t know that his father was down the mines. After the accident he had to wear a metal plate across his stomach because he refused to have surgery. This is thought to be the reason that he didn’t go into any of the armed forces during the wars.
Ernest worked on the railways. For a time he lodged at Rowsley in Derbyshire before moving to Stockport. He worked at Adswood Sidings, Cheadle Sidings, Jubilee Sidings nr Belmont Bridge from where he retired. One of his jobs was to check labels on wagons to see where they were going before linking them to the correct trains.

There was a story that he financially helped a nurse when she passed her exams. The story from Kenneth is that during WW2 Canadians and Americans were based in the UK. Albert Mason brought a US soldier called Allen to meet Ernest and he was supposedly engaged to Elaine Mason in Canada. They were based at Burtonwood Nr Warrington. Allen hooked up with a nurse who he called Margo but was known as Margaret on one visit. Margo was a trainee nurse from Warrington Hospital. Ernest encouraged her to pass her exams and when she did he gave her some cash - it may have only been a very small amount. She kept in touch with Ernest after the war and she was from Scarborough. Allen disappeared and did not maintain contact with Elaine Mason. Margaret later married a taxi driver who died young. She became a snr nurse. Kenneth says that she was something like a matron but she may have been an area manager.
