Born at 69 Sheffield Street Heaton Norris. Harry was angry when one of his daughters mentioned the address and said they must never talk about it again. Sheffield Street used to be called Canal Street prior to 6/7/1892 and was in Stockport in the urban district of Lancs. It was near the canal basin on Lancashire Hill nr Nelstrops Flour Mill.
In the General Register of Births his name was registered as Harry Thompson Bentley. GRO Vol 8a page 92 (Stockport June Q1904)
After Harry's death Annie let me see a Birth Certificate in the name of Harry Thompson Bentley something that Harry had always kept to himself. The Return of Births in the name of Thompson in Stockport Library show an entry was made after 30th April as other entries show date. Harry was brought up by his older sister, and he in turn had to look after his younger sisters while his mother Charlotte Amy Bentley worked.
Before meeting Annie, Harry worked near Liverpool on a Country Estate as a Gamesman for approx 2 years - possibly Hale Bank.They married at St Matthew's Parish Church Grenville Street Edgeley. Harry had a double wedding with his sister Annie Thompson and Arthur Stanway. Record of this was seen at St Matthew's Rectory where the original registers were seen. It is thought that the double wedding took place because Annie had become pregnant. At timeof marriage Harry lived at 10 Disley Street, off Newton Street, Edgeley (his father's address) -His mother Charlotte Amy Bentley lived at 2 Horsfield Place Edgeley. Annie Bird lived at 1 Edge Court, Bowden Street Stockport. After the wedding they lived with Annie's mother at Edge Court before moving to Pine Street, Edgeley which was close to Brinksway. They moved to Barnfield Road West in 1939 - it is thought that it was a brand new house.
Harry retired aged 62 with ill health (Bronchitis). He was cremated and his ashes spread on what was thought to be the family grave where his mother was buried.
